LETTER FROM KIRSTY STEVENSON, FOUNDER OF CANADIAN WEDDING OFFICIANTS

HOW THE IDEA OF CWO WAS BORN

When I decided to become a wedding officiant I looked for an industry trade association and couldn’t find one.

During my first years of officiating I discovered that officiants lacked a degree of recognition and appreciation by the public and within the wedding vendor community, despite our indispensable role in legalizing marriages.

WHY START CWO

Recognizing the need to elevate wedding officiants, I decided to act. Drawing upon my extensive entrepreneurial background and experience in leadership and not for profit roles, in March 2024 I launched Canadian Wedding Officiants (CWO) to serve as a voice for officiants and offer valuable resources and support:

  • to raise the profile of the industry¬†
  • to offer networking and professional development opportunities
  • to provide a Member Directory for couples looking for officiants¬†
  • to help new officiants navigate the pathway to becoming licensed

ADVISORY BOARD

I leveraged expertise from seasoned professionals, built a network of support and formed an Advisory Board of experienced officiants to offer advice and guidance. As we move forward CWO will establish Working Committees to ensure its continued growth and relevance.

FEEDBACK IS ENCOURAGED

I welcome comments from members to develop programs and initiatives to meet their needs. CWO has a open-door policy to encourage input to guide our evolution.

THE DIRECTION FOR EDUCATION

CWO focuses on providing educational recommendations, without accreditation requirements, given the abundance of available resources.

INCLUSIVITY

CWO welcomes all licensed officiants and vendors, regardless of their personal stance on inclusivity. Transparency remains paramount and we ask members to disclose their position on inclusivity, and include this on their profiles, thereby empowering couples to make informed choices.

THE FUTURE

CWO aims to reflect the evolving landscape of the wedding officiant industry, embracing its diverse cultural and religious tapestry. As we embark on this journey, I extend a warm welcome to all wedding officiants and vendors, inviting collaboration as we navigate this exciting endeavour together.

If you want more information on my background, my resume can be found here.
